Tuparro National Park

El Tuparro is an extensive green savannah surrounded by large rivers with powerful torrents and golden beaches, small spots of crystalline waters, gallery forests, Moriche Palm swamps and mangrove. Furthermore it characterizes by huge rock formations in shape of rounded hills. The rapids of Atures and Maipures, according to the legend, were made by a desperate father who wanted to recover their children from a curse.
On this excursion we will get to know the Colombian Orinoquia in the Vichada department. In 1970 it was declared a fauna territory with an area of 250.000 hectares. Afterwards in 1980 the reserve was expanded and named as a National Natural Park with a total of 548.000 hectares. It was declared the eighth wonder by Humboldt. Today it is a national monument, a world heritage site and a biosphere reserve. This is a true exploration of wild lands – one of the most important nature destinations in Colombia.
Day 1: Flight with Satena Airline from Bogota to Puerto Carreño. Lunch in Puerto Carreño. Transfer towards the National Natural Park El Tuparro. First we will take a road for approximately 4 hours till the Garcitas inspection and then we will continue by boat for another hour and a half. Accommodation near the park in the place called Tambora. Tambora is an abandoned school which now is used to accommodate the visitors heading to Tuparro. The visitors will sleep in in beds covered by tent.
Day 2: After breakfast, transfer by boat for 2 hours on Tuparro river towards Caño Lapa (“Caño” in Spanish means a small river stream). On the way the traveller will observe gallery forests and rock formations. Lunch during the tour. In the afternoon there will be time for wildlife and jungle sighting by boat on the Tuparro river. Return to the camp, dinner and rest.
Day 3: After breakfast 1 hour navigation on the Orinoco River towards Tomo River where the administrative visitors center of the Park is situated. Hike to Cerro Peinillas to appreciate the extensive savannas. Lunch. In the afternoon we will continue touring through different nature attractions like Pozo Azul, Thomas Hill and the famous roc Cuao Sipapo. Return to Tambora. Dinner and rest in the cabins.
Day 4: Departure to the hill called Carestía. We will climb the hill which serves as a spectacular natural viewpoint. Return to the cabins, swimming in the river Tuparro. In the afternoon an ecological walk on a path that takes you closer to the rapids of Tuparro river. Return to the camp.
Day 5: After breakfast we will take a boat for about 2 hours on the Orinoco River to Casuarito village. Lunch in Casuarito. From here you will take ground transportation to Piaroa community which belongs to Cachicamo ethnic group. Transfer to Puerto Carreño. Flight back to Bogota.
- Dry season: November – May, rainy season: June – October. The weather is hot.
- Buy your flight ticket with Satena Airline company www.satena.com. There is only one flight per day Bogota – Puerto Carreño and vice versa. We recommend selecting your departure flight on the day when the flight is early in the morning and on the return day (day 5) the flight is late in the night. - Tambora camp is an antique school which was abandoned. One are of the school is now used to locate beds covered by tent. Tambora camp has basic bathrooms. It is possible to charge batteries.
- The itinerary may change due to weather conditions, due to Satena flight company schedule changes, etc.
- Do not forget your identification documents and insurance card. Inform us if you are under medical treatment and bring formulated medicines.
- Tetanus vaccination is recommended as a precaution and yellow fever vaccine, at least 10 days before your trip.
- You must avoid bringing harmful elements that threaten biodiversity such as aerosols, firearms and hallucinogenic beverages because they accelerate blood circulation and in case of a bite of a poisonous snake, the circulation of the poison would be much faster, seriously complicating the treatment that must be performed. For this reason the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the reserve is prohibited
- It is necessary to carry plastic bags for the disposal of garbage of a non-biodegradable character (bottles, batteries, cans, etc.)
- It is not allowed to collect plant and animal material
- NO CARRY: valuables, pets, camouflaged clothing or military implements, music, electronic games
