Amazon Nature Tour
Emblematic places
The Amazon rainforest is one of the most bio diverse regions of the world, representing 54% of the total rainforests on Earth. Producing about 20% of all the oxygen in the world, it is considered the lung of the planet. The Amazon River flows over 6,900 kilometers from the glaciers of Mismi, Peru till the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil and is considered the lifeline of the rainforest.
Around 215 tribes, speaking 170 different languages, live within the Amazon rainforest. They are the primary sources of knowledge regarding the indigenous plants and their natural and medicinal properties, most of which have not been studied scientifically. The Amazon in Colombia borders with Brazil and Peru.
During this tour you will explore the Amazonian rainforests in Colombia and Peru as you immerse yourself in and learn about the natural splendor of this region as well as its indigenous cultures by visiting various local communities.
Day 1: On your arrival to Leticia we will take a taxi down the road leading to Terapacá where we will begin an ecological walk of 2 hours in the jungle to the indigenous Wayruru community. During the walk you will learn about timber trees, medicinal plants of the region and the various indigenous cultures and their customs.
Upon reaching the Maloca (a traditional indigenous house where meetings and traditional festivals are held), you will be received by the community leader. He will speak about the importance of this place within the tribe and the sacred substances that are used there such as Mambe, Coca, Rape, Ambil and ground tobacco. After a traditional lunch the tour continues visiting the “chagra” – the place where traditional crops such as cassava, banana, pineapple, the coca plant and tobacco are grown. You will get a chance to learn about regional cuisine while preparing dinner with community members. We will end the day with a night walk to see bioluminescent mushrooms and other fascinating animals and plants.
Accommodation in hammocks.
Day 2: After breakfast we will walk back to the road from where a taxi will take us to Leticia. We will take a public boat up the Amazon River until we reach Bocana de Arara. There the tour continues by a small boat which takes us to the Nature Reserve – Arara Ecolodge, which is surrounded by two indigenous communities Arara of the Tikuna and the Maloca from the Yaguaa. In the Reserve you will enjoy some cultural activities such as a Huita workshop (natural dying) or the Yanchama Workshop or fishing.
After lunch, you will be able to do canopy and go on an ecological walk learning more about the flora and fauna of the area. Accommodation in simple huts or in hammocks in the jungle – you can decide.
Day 3: After breakfast we cross the Amazon River in a “Peke Peke” (a small wooden boat) over to Peru where we will visit the Natamu Nature Reserve. This is the home place of the indigenous community Chinería who live along the banks of the river with the same name.
At Natamu we will go on a nature walk only if the water level permits it. If the water level is too high we will explore the jungle by canoe or kayak. We can also visit the indigenous community, go fishing or simply relax and soak in the beauty of the rainforest. After dinner we will go to look for Caymans. Accommodation in simple huts.
Day 4: After breakfast we will head back to Leticia to check out the market and some interesting spots. We will then take you to the airport or leave in Leticia (as requested).
- There are several commercial flights from Bogota to Leticia (Leticia is the Amazon town in Colombia where you start the tour). We recommend taking early morning flight so that you have more time for the first day activities. For your return, ideally you take and afternoon flight back to Bogota.
- High water levels can be expected in February, March, April and the highest levels can be expected in May and the beginning of June. The water levels normally drop from mid-June.
- Remember that the temperatures in Amazon are very high and it is very humid. Bring appropriate clothing.
- We mostly use public boats during the tour. For some specific activities, when the public boat is not possible, we use private boats.
- The hotels we use for the tour are simple, still they have private bathroom, (except the “tree house”). If you desire to stay in the best hotels and lodges of the area, please contact us in order to adjust the hotel offer for this tour (only where possible). Or the other option is to take the program called “Calanoa Jungle Experience”.
- There is no hot water at any place in Amazon, there is no energy 24 hours
- If you want to extend your stay in Amazon, do not hesitate to contact us
- We understand that not everybody enjoys zip lines and similar adventure activities. If that is your case, we can replace it by another activity, for example longer jungle walk in Tanimboca or visiting some indigenous community, etc.
- It is essential to include a flashlight in the luggage
- Please note that there are ATMs or banks only in Leticia. As soon as you leave the town, you can only use cash in Colombian pesos
- It is recommended to carry a back pack. The bags with wheels are uncomfortable for transfers by boat and on foot (at some parts you might need to carry it). Carry only what is really necessary. If you have some extra luggage, you can leave it with us and we take care of it during the tour.
